Red Sox Recall Drew Sutton From Pawtucket, Send Jose Iglesias Back to Triple-A

Multiple reports indicate that the Red Sox have called up infielder Drew Sutton, optioning current utility man Jose Iglesias back to the minors. To make room for Sutton on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox have designated outfielder Daniel Nava for assignment.

Nava, 28, is best known for crushing a grand slam in the first pitch of his first career at-bat. Nava contributed to a depleted Red Sox roster in 2010, hitting .242 with one homerun and 26 RBIs in 60 games. Nava was batting .192 with 10 RBIs in Triple-A Pawtucket this season.

The 21-year-old Iglesias appeared in six games for the Red Sox this season. The shortstop, signed by the Red Sox in 2009, took over the utility infielder role when starting shortstop Marco Scutaro was placed on the disabled list, forcing utility man Jed Lowrie into the starting role. Known primarily for his glove and speed, Iglesias was batting .253 with two stolen bases at Pawtucket this season.

Sutton, 27, saw limited field time playing with Cincinnati and Cleveland the past few seasons. The infielder turned heads this spring, though, when he batted .382 during spring training. Sutton continued his hot streak into the season, batting .304 with five home runs and 26 RBIs through 36 games for the Pawtucket Red Sox.

According to Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe, Scutaro will be out longer than expected, and Red Sox management thought it would be more beneficial for Iglesias to play every day in Triple-A.
