The news of Osama bin Laden's death came with a great deal of satisfaction from Americans, but it also came with the harrowing reminder that this country is still at war. Not surprisingly, the NBA is taking notice.
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the NBA has mandated the use of metal detectors for the rest of the NBA playoffs as there is now a heightened sense of awareness following bin Laden's death at the hands of U.S. forces Sunday in Pakistan.
The mandate will be enforced for the first time on Monday night in Chicago at the United Center where the Bulls will take on the Hawks. While the United Center does not always use metal detectors, an ESPN report points out that the arena's website says that they use metal detectors only when "the potential is high for inappropriate or illegal items to be brought into the building."
The Los Angeles Lakers are also in action on Monday night, as they host the Dallas Mavericks. The use of metal detectors at Staples Center takes place for every event.
