Send Patriots Reporter Jeff Howe a Question for His Weekly Mailbag The Patriots never fail to keep it interesting during the draft, and this week was more of the same in that regard. There were the rumors of trading up, the reality of trading down and the surprise of taking Nate Solder at No. 17.

In true Bill Belichick fashion, he also set himself up well in next year’s draft, though it meant passing on some good talent in the process.

Solder is a developmental prospect who could benefit from a year on the bench, but that will all be determined by Matt Light‘s status. And one other thing about Solder, Belichick said he’s locked in at left tackle, which means Sebastian Vollmer will be the right tackle of the future.

Solder might not have been the most popular pick in the area, but he’ll certainly be a big player for the Patriots. And most importantly, they won’t have to scramble to locate Light’s successor, whether that happens immediately or a year or two down the road.
