Red Sox manager Terry Francona admitted that the late cuts of relievers Scott Atchison and Rich Hill were tough ones during spring training, but he always expected they'd return to the Boston bullpen at some point in 2011.

The time has come for both pitchers, as Hill and Atchison were called up from Pawtucket on Thursday after the Red Sox placed Bobby Jenks and Dan Wheeler on the 15-day disabled list.

Before Thursday's afternoon matchup with the Angels, Francona sat down with the media to explain the bullpen shuffle, saying that Hill and Atchison have done what the Red Sox "asked them to do."

"They were late cuts and they were tough ones," Francona said of the two relievers. "Neither one went down and pouted, they went down and did their job."
