Tim Tschida, Who Made ‘Phantom Tag’ Call in 1999 ALCS, Among Umpires for Tuesday’s Red Sox-White Sox Game

Bill Welke is calling balls and strikes Tuesday night at Fenway Park, where the Red Sox and Chicago White Sox are meeting in the second of three straight games.

Crew chief Tim Tschida is at first base, Mike Estabrook at second and Marty Foster at third.

Tschida is known in these parts for his blown call in the 1999 American League Championship Series against the Yankees. He ruled that New York second baseman Chuck Knoblauch tagged Jose Offerman in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 4. Knoblauch clearly whiffed on the tag, but Tschida called Offerman out and Knoblauch threw to first for an inning-ending double play, preserving a 3-2 lead.

The furor over the call caused Red Sox fans to pelt the field with debris, which prompted Yankees manager Joe Torre to pull his team into the dugout.

The Yankees held on to win the game and take the series in five games.
