It has always seemed that New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez has never been able to completely endear himself to fans and opponents around MLB. Now, there is evidence to back that up.
In a recent Sports Illustrated poll regarding the "most overrated" player in baseball, Rodriguez was an overwhelming choice for first, finishing ahead of teammates Joba Chamberlain and Derek Jeter.
"I've been on this list many, many times and I'm sure I'll be there again next summer," Rodriguez said prior to Wednesday's game, according to ESPN.com. "I will say this –- if this is the only thing we're talking about, we're doing good."
Chamberlain, who finished first in last year's poll, seemed to take the results with a grain of salt as well.
"I'm in good company," Chamberlain said when told he finished between A-Rod and Jeter, "I don't care what you say. That's good company there."
"So you're not number one?" pitcher A.J. Burnett asked Chamberlain, "That [stinks]."
Meanwhile, the captain of the Yankees seemed to be a bit less-amused with the results.
"We're doing this again? I've got no comment of their anonymous polls," Jeter said, "So there you have it. Got it? All right.
"I've never understood those anonymous polls,” Jeter continued, "Come on, man. It's the same thing they do every year, right? I'm focused on more positive things. There's your quote."
Chamberlain, meanwhile, was still able to put it in perspective.
"I don't care," said Chamberlain, "My bills are still paid and I still have a job. You can call me what you want, just don't call me late for dinner. Everybody is entitled to their opinion; that's why this country is so great."
Red Sox pitcher Jonathan Papelbon and Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth finished tied for fourth.
