Vancouver just re-signed one of their best defenders in Kevin Bieksa, but they decided to let a different defender go.

The Canucks traded Christian Ehrhoff's rights to the New York Islanders for a fourth-round draft pick, NHL.com reports.

Ehrhoff, who played in 79 games for the Canucks this year, recording 50 points, was slated to become an unrestricted free agent. The trade gives the Islanders negotiating rights before free agency begins on July 1. In the playoffs this year, the blue-liner recorded 12 points.
