Mike Cameron has been a starter for most of his major league career. And for most of that career, which includes three Gold Glove Awards, that has made absolute sense.
Since signing his two-year, $15.5 million contract before the start of last season, though, Cameron has spent most of his time with the Red Sox plagued by injuries. This time spent off the field and in the trainer's room has made it that much harder for Cameron, known for being a consumate professional, to adjust to his role as a bench player.
And since he was designated for assignment on Thursday, Cameron may never be able to assimilate into the "leader-off-the-bench" role the Sox hoped he would fulfill.
