Boston College and Boston University have a long and storied rivalry, but that isn't preventing coaches from crossing the path from Chestnut Hill to Boston proper.

Joe Jones, a former associate head coach at Boston College, signed with BU just a few weeks after former head coach Patrick Chambers left for Penn State, BU Today reports.

Both BU president Robert Brown and assistant vice president and director of athletics Michael Lynch said they were pleased that Jones took the head-coaching job.

"Joe comes with impressive credentials and past head-coaching experience that will help take the program to the next level," Lynch said.

Before his one-year stint at Boston College, Jones served as the head coach at Columbia from 2003-10, helping the Lions to their best performances since the early 1990s. Jones started out with Hofstra, and also was an assistant coach at Villanova.

"I am truly honored to be named the next basketball coach at Boston University," Jones said. "We are going to play an exciting, up-tempo brand of basketball. I am looking forward to meeting the entire BU family and building on the rich BU basketball tradition."
