Jonathan Towes and the majority of his Blackhawks teammates joined what seemed like the rest of the hockey world this month by rooting against the Canucks in the Stanley Cup Final.
Was it because of the biting, the diving, the dirty, blind-side hits or the taunting? According to the Chicago Tribune, Toews was cheering for the Bruins simply because he didn't want to see his Western Conference rivals hoisting Lord Stanley's Cup.
"I watched all the games in Boston and I watched Game 7," Toews said. "Our guys had been kind of joking in the classiest way possible about keeping our fingers crossed for Boston. You never want to see your rivals take it home. It was a heck of a series to watch."
Playing against the Canucks and in Vancouver multiple times per season, Toews knows firsthand how crazy the 'Nucks fan base can be. And when news outlets across the globe showed the disgusting riot footage following Game 7, Toews said he wasn't surprised at all.
"I kind of expected that," Toews said. "Those fans are crazy. When we beat them the last couple of years they were throwing stuff on the ice. They're crazy fans and obviously passionate about their team. I kind of expected a reaction one way or another."
