Seven SEC coaches backed Spurrier's plan at the annual SEC spring meetings earlier this month, including LSU's Les Miles, Alabama's Nick Saban and Mississippi State's Dan Mullen.
Mullen spoke about the issue on Tuesday at a golf tournament in Greenville, S.C.
"It'd be great to give [the players] some spending money," Mullen told The Delta Democrat Times. "They don't need major money; they just need enough to go out with the other college kids and get themselves a pizza on a Friday night."
The NCAA currently forbids payment of any kind to student-athletes, and NCAA president Mark Emmert says that while the NCAA is open to exploring ways to compensate those student-athletes for the revenue they bring to the school, paying by game as Spurrier suggests is out of the question.
"I think paying players by game doesn't make any sense to me at all," Emmert told Macon.com. "Are you going to pay them for every game they go to, are you going to pay them for women's volleyball, and why $300, why not $600. … That's converting student-athletes into employees, and I'm adamantly opposed to that, and I think that would be the death of intercollegiate athletics."
Spurrier has said that he doubts his plan will pass as proposed, but hopes that it will open up a field for further discussion in the future.
