Despite another MVP season from Jimmie Foxx, the Red Sox once again fell short of a playoff berth in 1938, finishing with a record of 88-61.
The 30-year-old Foxx set new career highs in batting average (.349), RBI (175) and on-base percentage (.462) to lock up his third AL MVP honor. Even with Foxx leading the way, the Red Sox still finished 9 1/2 games behind the eventual World Series champion Yankees.
In the fall the Boston Shamrocks, an American Football League franchise, played some games at Fenway but folded after the conclusion of the season. The Boston College football team turned in one of its best seasons, going 4-1.
