It may be a while before Daisuke Matsuzaka is back on a mound in the majors.
According to Yahoo!'s Tim Brown, the Red Sox right-hander is considering Tommy John surgery to repair an injury to his injured right elbow.
Brown says that a source has indicated that Matsuzaka is "leaning toward [surgery] after [Dr. Lewis] Yocum found significant tear and recommended procedure."
Brown also indicated that Matsuzaka needs to first meet with the Red Sox to discuss the pending decision with the team.
Other reports, including one from the Japanese news outlet, Nikkan Sports, also indicated that the surgery was needed and that it was likely.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona called an initial report claiming that the righty would need Tommy John surgery "irresponsible." It was at the same time that Matsuzaka was dismissed from the team to meet with Yocum and to head home to Japan.
Matsuzaka said he first felt discomfort during his April 29 start against the Mariners, and he was later placed on the disabled list on May 18.
