South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier Proposes Payment of College Football Players in the Southeastern Conference

The payment of Division I college athletes has been debated for years. Arguments for both sides present valid points, but no legal form of payment has ever been agreed upon.

Steve Spurrier, head football coach at South Carolina, has stepped forward and proposed a plan that he hopes will, if nothing else, open talks in the future about payment of players, according to Yahoo.

Spurrier feels that players should “get a little piece of the pie” and his proposal, though bold, could finally see that come to fruition.

“A bunch of us coaches felt so strongly about it that we would be willing to pay it — 70 guys, 300 bucks a game,” Spurrier told Yahoo’s Mark Long. “That’s only $21,000 a game. I doubt it will get passed, but as coaches in the SEC, we make all the money — as do universities, television — and we need to get more to our players.”

Spurrier wants the players, who are ultimately responsible for the millions of dollars in revenue each week, to be able to help pay for travel fares for their families and take their girlfriends out for dinner.

Spurrier has the support of fellow SEC coaches such as LSU’s Les Miles and Alabama’s Nick Saban. The proposal will be introduced at the SEC’s annual meetings.
