While surviving another year in the Premier League with a middle-of-the-pack standing, Sunderland is looking to spend a good portion of their money from recent transfers on three Manchester United reserves.
With the money from the recent sale of striker Darren Bent to Aston Villa in January and the impending transfer of Jordan Henderson to Liverpool, Sunderland skipper Steve Bruce is targeting defenders John O’Shea and Wes Brown and midfielder Darren Gibson to beef up a backline that allowed 56 goals last season.
The 30-year-old O'Shea appeared in 20 EPL games, assisting on three goals.
The 31-year-old Brown appeared in seven EPL games, mostly as a replacement for either first team center backs, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
The 23-year-old Gibson appeared in just 12 EPL games for the Red Devils last season, but should be utilized more if he joins Sunderland’s less-crowded midfield.
The moves are still in the early stages, as nothing can move forward until the Henderson deal is finalized.
