MINNEAPOLIS — Just over a year ago, Tim Thomas revealed after the season that he had been suffering from a serious hip injury that required surgery.
This year, it will be Tuukka Rask's turn to go under the knife after the season. Rask's injury is not nearly as serious, but he will soon undergo a procedure on his knee. Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli revealed Rask's injury Thursday in Minneapolis during his conversation with reporters previewing this weekend's draft.
"Tuukka has to get his meniscus scoped," Chiarelli said. "It's a minor apostrophic procedure. He'll have that done and that's like five to seven days [recovery]."
Rask dressed as Thomas' backup in every playoff game, but did not appear in the postseason. After supplanting the ailing Thomas as a starter in 2009-10 and leading the league with a 1.97 GAA and a .931 save percentage to go with a 22-12-5 record, Rask slipped to 11-14-2 with a 2.67 GAA and a .918 save percentage this year while Thomas reemerged as the game's top goalie with a record-setting campaign en route to winning the Vezina and Conn Smythe.
Chiarelli also stated that forward Milan Lucic will be undergoing a surgical procedure to fix his oft-broken nose.
"Looch is getting his nose reset and having surgery on it," Chiarelli said. "I think that's it [for surgeries among the Bruins]."
Chiarelli confirmed that Lucic's broken toe and Nathan Horton's separated shoulder would not require any surgeries.
"Yeah, just rest and recovery there," Chiarelli said.
