It’s difficult to spin positives from back-to-back losses to begin a series. After all, this is the Stanley Cup Final and there are no such things as moral victories in games of this magnitude. But the Bruins lost each of the first two games by one goal — the first one with 18.5 seconds left in the third period and the second one 11 seconds into overtime — showing that they can hang with what has been the league’s best team all season.
There were some other encouraging signs in their performance in Game 2 on Saturday, which the Bruins could potentially build on as they continue their battle with the Canucks.
Mark Recchi, who hadn’t scored a goal since Game 1 of the Bruins’ conference semifinal series with the Flyers, finally rippled the mesh on Saturday. Not only that, but Recchi’s goal came on the power play, which has been the team’s Achilles’ heel for quite some time.
Then, of course, there is the old saying that a series doesn’t truly begin until a team wins on the road. The Bruins came close in both games in Vancouver, but now they’ll return to the friendly confines of the TD Garden, where a little home cooking will surely give the team an emotional boost.
It’s the first time a Stanley Cup Final game that will be played in Boston since 1990, so the crowd should undoubtedly be raucous.
