Who Is the Best Free Agent-to-Be in MLB, Other Than Albert Pujols? So Albert Pujols might be the best hitter of this generation, and he is likely to hit the open market. It's safe to say he'll be the No. 1 free agent in baseball.

Looking past Pujols, though, there is a good crop of players (we'll leave out the pitchers for now) who could be obtained for nothing more than a big ol' check.

One of those players, Prince Fielder, heads to Fenway Park this weekend for just the second time in his career. He's averaged 40 homers and 111 RBIs per season over the last four years, and he'll be 28 next May, entering the prime of his career. The only concern, though, is his body, which doesn't exactly appear to be that of an athlete and may not carry him through his 30s.

Another enticing option is Jose Reyes. The electric shortstop currently leads the National League in hits (101), triples (12) and batting average (.348) this season.

Another shortstop will be available in Jimmy Rollins. The 2007 NL MVP is past his prime, but he's still an effective player with a winning resume.

One other name on the list might be a bit surprising, as it's that of David Ortiz. The designated hitter wasn't expected to rake this year, but that's all he's been doing. Seventeen homers, 44 RBIs, a .314 batting average and a .994 OPS have many folks believing the Red Sox will sign him to an extension during the season. If he don't, he'll likely command a good deal of attention on the free-agent market.
