Asante Samuel woke up Friday morning as the Philadelphia Eagles' top cornerback. Less than 24 hours later, it's looking like Samuel may not have a spot on the team.
The Eagles made headlines on Friday morning when they traded quarterback Kevin Kolb to Arizona for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Philly then shocked everyone when the prize of the free agent class, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, decided to sign with the team. The acquisitions of the two defensive backs clearly makes Samuel expendable.
Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweeted: "The Eagles plan is to carry all three CBs for the season unless they get a good trade offer."
Well, considering that Philly just dished out a bunch of money and a young quarterback for Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie, it would be silly for Philly to not entertain trade offers for Samuel.
Greg Cosell of NFL Films also tweeted an astute observation, noting "Eagles now have 2 CB who can play effective press man in Nnamdi + DRC. Samuel is an off coverage zone corner. Hard to see Samuel on roster."
So, it may not even be depth that pushes Samuel out the door, but instead a switch in defensive philosophy.
Samuel is set to make $5.9 million in the fourth year of a six-year contract. Prior to the Eagles, Samuel played five seasons with the New England Patriots, where he won two Super Bowls.
