BOSTON — Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz will see back specialist Dr. Craig Bingham this week as he explores the cause of lingering soreness in his lower back.
Manager Terry Francona made the announcement Monday, hours after Buchholz met with team physician Dr. Thomas Gill. The club is trying to determine why the young pitcher cannot get past a certain point in his recovery.
"It’s interesting. It just hurts when he does certain things pitching," Francona said. "He's moving around so well other than that. But, obviously, when he's hurt pitching [it is an issue]."
Buchholz went on the 15-day disabled list June 19, retroactive to the 17th. That left him available to be activated for the team's current seven-game homestand. However, Buchholz experienced some pain after a throwing session during the recent nine-game road trip.
That pretty much ruled him out until after the All-Star break. The trip to see Dr. Bingham will help the team determine exactly how long after the break before Buchholz is able to return.
