Clay Buchholz’s Return Date Still Uncertain, But Strong Play Could Keep Red Sox From Dealing for Pitcher

Clay Buchholz will throw a mound session on Monday. That, and the fact that the right-hander's back situation will likely continue to linger is about all that is known about his status right now.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona talked about Buchholz prior to Saturday night's game with the Mariners, and said that the lingering back issue is something that his starter will likely have to deal with for the rest of the season. The good news, though, is that the condition isn't expected to get worse.

However, even with Buchholz and fellow starer Jon Lester missing time, the Sox have continued to play good baseball, going 12-3 in the month of July. The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo said on Red Sox First Pitch that Boston's recent stretch of strong play could keep the Sox from getting carried away at the trade deadline in trying to find a starter.
