Jed Lowrie Could Begin Rehab Assignment Monday With Pawtucket, Will Be Re-Evaluated at End of Week

Red Sox infielder Jed Lowrie may begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket as early as Monday, Terry Francona told reporters in Chicago, where the Red Sox are preparing for a three-game series with the White Sox.

Lowrie has been on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury since June 17. He recently began hitting in the batting cage, the last step in his progression toward returning to game action.

The versatile infielder, who claimed the starting shortstop job with a remarkable stretch in April, was hurt when he collided with left fielder Carl Crawford in Detroit on May 29. He sustained some nerve damage in the collision, which slowly sapped him of his strength in the shoulder.

Lowrie played for the next few weeks, but struggled mightily before being placed on the DL.

Francona said that Lowrie will probably play at least two games at shortstop and at least one as the designated hitter for the PawSox. He will be re-evaluated at the end of the week to determine if he needs more time in the minors.
