The Patriots have been in conversations with Light, who spent the first 10 years of his career in New England.
"Matt's been a good player for us for a long time," Caserio said. "I'd say there are discussions that are ongoing. I don't want to put a timetable on it, but Matt's made a lot of contributions to this team. He's been a good player for us, so we'll see what happens."
At the risk of grossly overreacting, I'm going to read a little more into that comment and extract something that really stood out. First, it's important that the two sides are discussing a potential contract.
More significantly, Caserio brought up a "timetable." That word would only be used, in my opinion, if Caserio was extremely optimistic about re-signing Light. After all, who puts a timetable on a free man's departure?
The Patriots used a first-round pick on left tackle Nate Solder in April's draft, and there has been a wild amount of money tossed around the free-agent market. Both of those reasons made it look like Light might have played his last down in New England.
And hey, that could still be very true. But when I read a little more into Caserio's comment, I started to think that Light's return is a very realistic possibility.
