When considering who the best cornerback in the NFL is, most conversations come down to a debate between Darrelle Revis and Nnamdi Asomugha. Now, it appears the Jets are trying hard to ensure that both will suiting up for them this season.

According to The Star-Ledger, the Jets have reached out to Asomugha, who is one of the most coveted free agents on the open market. The Jets have reportedly intensified those efforts and, if the team has its way, he could wind up with them by the end of Wednesday, according to ESPN.com.

The Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers are also reportedly in the mix for the star cornerback's services, though.

Asomugha likely has a huge payday on tap, as he, like Revis, is regarded as one of the league's few shutdown corners. That might work against the Jets, who could face salary cup trouble if they sign him, although Asomugha reportedly may take less money to play in New York and for a contender.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets are serious about pursuing Asomugha, as is Revis.

"We want to see it. Hopefully it will happen," Revis said.

The Jets began Wednesday by re-signing wide receiver Santonio Holmes to a five-year deal. If they're able to land Asomugha as well, it would mean a huge day on both sides of the ball.
