A number of teams were believed to have pursued Carlos Beltran in the hopes of landing an impact bat prior to Sunday's trade deadline. The Pirates reportedly were among the most aggressive, but Beltran had no intentions of joining Pittsburgh's unexpected playoff run.
According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Pirates made an aggressive push to obtain Beltran, but the six-time All-Star refused to waive his no-trade clause to go to Pittsburgh.
The Pirates, as well as the Cleveland Indians, were reportedly willing to pick up all of the $6.5 million remaining on Beltran's contract. The Mets will be picking up $4 million themselves as part of the deal they ultimately made with the San Francisco Giants.
According to Kovacevic, Beltran gave the Mets a list of seven teams to which he would accept a trade and the Pirates were not among them.
