Amid recent NCAA sanctions and reports of declining academic performance related to the men's basketball team, the University of Connecticut reportedly is working on a deal to buy out athletic director Jeff Hathaway's contract.
Hathaway's job performance has come under scrunity for everything from micromanagement to failing to hire experienced candidates for certain NCAA compliance positions, reports The Day of New London, Conn.
The Associated Press confirmed the report Monday.
Hathaway, who has been UConn's A.D. for eight years, could be replaced in a matter of weeks, according to the AP.
"We will be excellent stewards of public and private funds in all areas of the university," UConn president Susan Herbst said in a statement quoted by the AP. "As a result, I will be reviewing all divisions of the university over time, but with great urgency, to make sure that we are serving this state in the best possible way. Accountability and excellence are our themes, going forward. The Division of Athletics is one of those areas of the university in which we have already begun this evaluation process."
The Huskies have enjoyed great on-field and on-court success during Hathaway's tenure, most recently with the men's basketball team's national championship last season. But the Journal Inquirer of Manchester, Conn., said that athletic department employees and alumni had been interviewed by a firm hired to look at Hathaway's performance.
