It was just a matter of time before Teddy Ballgame really made his presence felt. Ted Williams had a rough go of it in the 1946 World Series, but in the “Red Sox Showdown for the Ages,” he’s one of the main reasons his team is tied up in the final series with the 2003 team.

Williams hit a two-run home run in the top of the third to give the ’46 team a 5-1 lead on their way to a 9-3 win to even up the best-of-seven series at two games apiece.

The homer was the second of the series for Williams, though the first came late in Game 1 when it was out of reach. The round-tripper also broke something of a drought, at least in regards to someone like Williams, through Games 2 and 3.

The ’46 team also got another strong starting pitching performance, this time from Dave Ferriss. He followed up Mickey Harris‘ Game 3 performance by going eight innings and giving up just three earned runs.

Check back on Tuesday for the results of what will be a pivotal Game 5, and for more information on Game 4 and the rest of the tournament, be sure to visit WhatIfSports.com.
