Andrew Ference Sticks Up for Mark Recchi, Fights David Backes, Despite Giving Up Four Inches

Andrew Ference decided to tangle with St. Louis’ David Backes after the latter delivered a an open-ice hit on Mark Recchi.

Ference and Backes exchanged a few punches before Ference knocked Backes’ helmet off. Backes’ returned the favor shortly after, and added a few more overhand punches. Ference, the smaller player, kept his balance longer than Backes, and Backes slipped a little on the ice, prompting the referees to intervene.

Ference ended up with a two-minute minor for instigating in addition to the five-minute major for fighting.
