Derek Jeter, Minka Kelly Break Up, Proving 37-Year-Old Shortstop Is Unlovable

Derek Jeter and Minka Kelly have split.

We probably should have made sure you were sitting down before we wrote that sentence.

Sorry.

The 37-year-old Yankees icon and the 31-year-old actress are no longer an item. Entertainment website JustJared.com was first with the news, and People magazine later confirmed it.

“The split was amicable,” sources told JustJared. “But they remain friends. They still really care for each other.”

Well, that’s nice.

The split’s not surprising, considering every woman in Jeter’s life has never stuck around for a long time. What is surprising is that Kelly was a part of HBO’s documentary on Jeter last month, thereby being a part of history before she became history.

Whenever the split took place, Jeter hasn’t seemed to be affected on the field. He’s hitting .492 since Aug. 11, and in a three-game set with Oakland this week, he went 8-for-14 (.571) with two walks and a triple.

Kelly joins a long list of women (Mariah Carey, Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson, Adriana Lima, Joy Enriquez, Vida Guerra, Vanessa Minnillo, etc. …) who were drawn in by Jeter’s fame and fortune, only to discover what all Red Sox fans have known for years: Derek Jeter is unlovable. At this point in time, the evidence is just too overwhelming to argue otherwise.

“Among the 131 pages of rule changes proposed by the NCAA last week was No. 2011-78, which allows schools to provide student-athletes with cream cheese, butter, peanut butter and jelly to put on their bagels. While the bagels are permitted by a prior resolution, the spreads had been considered minor NCAA violations.”

No, Fitzy, Eck didn’t mean it like that. At least, I don’t think he meant it like that.

In case, for some reason, you weren’t watching the dramatic conclusion of the Baltimore-Washington preseason game on Thursday night, you missed Ray Lewis‘ debut as a play-by-play announcer. Here’s hoping the “Ooh! Ooh! Ooh!” call catches on nationwide.
