The 35-year-old Manning has been recovering from offseason neck surgery that rendered him unable to participate in any training camp practices or preseason games. Backups Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky handeled the majority of snaps through the squad's first three preseason games, all losses. On Aug. 24, the team lured 38-year-old Kerry Collins out of retirement to act as an extra insurance policy in case Manning was not ready to play by the season opener on Sept. 11.
The team's official release on Manning said the signal caller will practice with the team on a "limited basis."
"All of his practice work will be scripted and on a controlled basis," reads the statement. "The participation in limited football activity is a standard procedure in the club’s rehab protocol."
Manning threw for 4,700 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2010, leading the Colts to the AFC South division title.
