Bruins Cup Rewind: Shawn Thornton Uses Fists, Scoring Touch to Spark B’s in Emotional Win Over Thrashers

Editor's note: NESN is counting down the top 50 moments of the Bruins' 2011 Stanley Cup season. Every day from Aug. 17 to Oct. 5, a memorable moment from the 2011 season will air on NESN Daily and be posted on NESN.com.

When Shawn Thornton dropped the gloves two seconds in the Bruins' matchup with the Atlanta Thrashers on Dec. 23, it was only the beginning of what turned out to be a very eventful game.

Thornton went on to score two goals, giving him a new career-high for goals in a season, in a 4-1 victory over Atlanta. The game also featured a huge brawl toward the end, during which 96 penalty minutes were dished out.

But while the brawl sent the crowd into a frenzy, it was Thornton's all-around performance that had TD Garden rocking during the last game before Christmas.
