Daniel Agger’s Broken Ribs Expected to Keep Him Out of Liverpool Lineup for at Least Four Weeks Seven minutes into Sunday’s game against Tottenham, Liverpool defender Daniel Agger slipped and fell at the edge of his own penalty area, popped to his feet, clutched his side for a moment, then got back to defending. He made sure Tottenham striker Jermaine Defoe had little time and space to cross the ball.

Within seconds, Luka Modric would score the first of Tottenham’s four goals on the day, and Agger’s slip was an afterthought until he had to leave the game after 30 minutes with an injury. Scans revealed the extent of the damage and showed that the Danish defender broke two ribs and will miss at least the next four weeks of action.

The BBC reports Agger’s agent Per Steffensen told Danish outlet sporten.tv2.dk, "It's the worst possible news. He has broken two ribs, and he must keep still for four weeks."

He told website tipsbladet.dk, "Daniel is way down now and I certainly sympathise with him. He will miss the two [international] matches against Cyprus and Portugal and there is a match against Manchester United he also misses. It's insanely annoying."

Since he joined the team in 2006, Agger’s Liverpool career has been blighted by injuries. He was off to an impressive start this season, and hoped he could finally stay healthy for a full campaign.

The broken ribs will keep him out of Saturday’s game against Wolves, the Mersyside derby with Everton on Oct. 1, Sebastian Coates’s Oct. 7 birthday party, and the deathmatch with Manchester United on Oct. 15.

If the recovery timetable holds true, Agger could be fit enough to play on Oct. 22 against Norwich, but he will surely be short of match fitness by then. A trip to West Brom and a home game against Swansea occur at the end of the month and beginning of November. Barring setbacks, Agger should play some part in those games.

Liverpool certainly hopes he gets at least one match under his belt before its trip to Chelsea on Nov. 20.
