FOXBORO, Mass. — Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and Patriots cornerback Devin McCourty have a chance to get reacquainted Sunday at Gillette Stadium.
The last time they shared the field, in Week 7 of 2010, McCourty recorded his first career interception by running stride for stride with Patrick Crayton and high-pointing the ball to pull a midair robbery on Rivers’ pass. At the 2011 Pro Bowl, Rivers told McCourty he couldn’t believe that he was able to make that play.
“Yeah, he said that to me,” McCourty recalled Thursday. “I think this year coming back, he’s probably excited about the guys that he has healthy right there, so I’m still expecting the same thing as far as the balls being thrown down the field.”
Rivers shared a few more details about the conversation Wednesday.
“I wish I hadn’t thrown it, I do remember that,” Rivers said with a laugh while remembering the play. “But [McCourty] is one of the guys that stands out, just his speed and ability to attack the football and great instincts. It’s always fun getting to know guys over there [at the Pro Bowl] that you otherwise wouldn’t know. He seems like a great guy and obviously a great player.”
