Jacoby Ellsbury, Conor Jackson Team Up to Make Red Sox History BOSTON — There were plenty of superlatives Monday night for the Red Sox. Their 18 runs tied a team season high, as did their 20 hits (as well as their three errors, but we won't focus on that).

They also did something in the seventh inning that has never been done in the long, slugging history of this franchise.

Jacoby Ellsbury led off the seventh with an inside-the-park home run. Six batters later, Conor Jackson slugged a grand slam. It marked the first time in team annals that both feats had been accomplished in one inning.

Because he's the new guy, and because his accomplishment came second, Jackson ceded top honors to Ellsbury.

"[The grand slam] felt good. I'll give it to Jacoby though," Jackson said when asked which was more exciting. "It's pretty impressive right there and I know he's one away from 200 [hits], so the guy's doing something special this year."

Indeed, it was the latest highlight for Ellsbury, who also needs just two RBIs to reach 100 and is just one home run shy of tying David Ortiz for the team lead.

The inside-the-park job was his first.

"When I hit it I was hoping it was gonna get out," Ellsbury said. "And once I saw it hit the wall I saw it carom and I thought I had a pretty good shot at getting an inside-the-park home run, and I saw Bogie [third base coach Tim Bogar] waving me. I knew it could happen.

"It's tiring. I'd rather it just went over the fence but it was exciting. It was my first one and it was fun."

Ellsbury came home standing up and pumping his fist, the ignition for a seven-run outburst. Little did we know at the time that the outburst would include another notable homer, and a piece of history.
