Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis has bursitis in his left hip, according to manager Terry Francona.

Youkilis was in Boston for an MRI on the hip, which confirmed the condition, an inflammation of the bursa sac between the bone and soft tissue. He was given an injection and will either rejoin the team in St. Petersburg this weekend or when the club gets back to Boston for a homestand that begins Tuesday.

Francona did not say how long it would take for the injection to work its course, or how long Youkilis will be out.

Youkilis played seven games after coming off the disabled list Sept. 2, batting 5-for-27 (.185).
