Legendary Liverpool Manager Bill Shankly Died Thirty Years Ago on Sept. 29 (Video) Thirty years ago on Sept. 29, legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly (1913-1981) passed away. From 1959-1974, Shankly guided Liverpool from the depths of the second division to the commanding heights of the English game.

In his 15 years in charge, Liverpool won three league championships, two FA Cups and one UEFA Cup. During that time, he also laid the foundations that would see the club go on to dominate domestic and European soccer for the next decade and a half.

“Everything I’ve got, I owe it to football. And the dedication and what I put into the game,” Shankly said. “You only get out of the game what you put into it. And I put everything into it I could … and still do. For the people that I was playing for and the people I was managing for. I didn’t cheat them out of anything.”
