The Red Sox added depth to a well-worked bullpen Friday by recalling right-hander Scott Atchison from Triple-A Pawtucket.

The 35-year-old Atchison has a 4.42 ERA and one save in 10 games for the Red Sox this season. In his last appearance Aug. 26, he allowed one run in three innings before being optioned back down following the game. He was 6-2 with a 2.64 mark in 36 games (one start) for the PawSox this year.

Atchison was with Pawtucket during its first-round playoff matchup with Lehigh. He recorded two outs in relief in a Game 1 loss to the IronPigs on Monday.

Atchison's ability to go multiple innings could be very useful on a staff that is relying heavily on its bullpen right now. Red Sox relievers have thrown 33 2/3 innings in the last eight games, an average of more than four per game.

This is the fifth separate stint with Boston this season for Atchison, who will be out of options after the 2011 season. He was 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 43 games for the Red Sox in 2010.
