The New England Patriots reportedly released safety Brandon Meriweather on Saturday after unsuccessfully trying to trade him.

NFL Network reporter Albert Breer confirmed via Twitter a Pro Football Talk report that the Patriots released the fifth-year pro out of Miami. Meriweather becomes a free agent immediately, Breer reports.

Meriweather is the second safety to be a somewhat surprising cut by the Patriots this week. The team parted ways with veteran James Sanders on Monday in a salary-related move.
