In search of some last minute help for their rotation, the Red Sox had talks with the Mets about a deal which would have brought starting pitcher Chris Capuano to Boston just to make one start.

The deal, which was originally reported by the Boston Herald, fell through and Capuano started Thursday for the Mets, likely putting an end to all speculation.

Capuano, a native of West Springfield, Mass., entered Thursday 11-12 with a 4.47 ERA for the struggling Mets while playing out the rest of his one-year, $1.5 million contract.

He would likely have been handed the ball on Sunday at Yankee Stadium if things had worked out. He also would have been aquired too late to be eligible for the postseason roster.

Now, the Red Sox will continue to look for a suitable starter for Sunday's tilt with the Yankees. The most probable candidates include John Lackey and reliever Alfredo Aceves. But with the current forecast for rain this weekend, maybe the Sox will get some help from above after all.
