The Rhode Island native is in the midst of a 2,650-mile journey, called Run While You Can, from the Canadian border in Washington to the Mexican border in California. His mother was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease more than a decade ago, and he's running to raise money for Parkinson's awareness and to help find a cure.
Fox has raised nearly $100,000 thus far as he runs and hikes the entire length of the Pacific Crest Trail in 65 days, which requires him to travel 40 miles per day. His goal is set for $200,000.
"I have said that my mother is an inspiration to me, but it is not because she is bravely fighting Parkinson's," Fox said on the Run While You Can website. "It is because there was never any doubt that she would face and defeat whatever challenge arose. I don't dedicate my training and my efforts on the trail to her battle with a terrible disease, I simply dedicate them to her, for being my mom, for all that she's done and all that she is."
Fox earned 15 varsity letters at the Wheeler School in Providence, R.I., before becoming a four-year varsity letterman at Yale. He writes on his website that he discovered a tolerance for pain and endurance in himself that "I did not know I possessed."
"I have dedicated a year of my life to this challenge and will do everything in my power to prepare myself for success," Fox wrote. "Success, however, is not guaranteed. But with the right combination of hard work, determination, your support, and a healthy dose of luck, it will be possible. I know one thing, and that's that I won't let you down."
