Boston finished with 50 more penalty minutes than the Hurricanes, taking 17 penalties for 72 minutes compared to Carolina's eight for 22.
The Bruins will look to bounce back when they continue their homestand Thursday against Toronto.
Third Period, 16:16, Hurricanes 4-1: The Bruins will be shorthanded after all, as Claude Julien gets in on the act, drawing a bench minor and a game misconduct as he jaws at referee Paul Devorski.
Third Period, 16:16, Hurricanes 4-1: The sides are finally back at even strength, but the penalties continue as Lucic is given a misconduct for going after Gleason again. Lucic shoves him, but Gleason once again refuses to drop the gloves.
Third Period, 14:58, Hurricanes 4-1: The Hurricanes add another with Tuomo Ruutu scoring on a tap-in at the left post from Chad LaRose.
Tomas Kaberle started the play with an outlet pass to LaRose. Kaberle has two points this year, both assists against Boston.
Third Period, 13:26, Hurricanes 3-1: The Hurricanes finally break through on the two-man advantage with Eric Staal scoring from the top of the crease after a Carolina timeout to settle things down.
The Hurricanes remain on a two-man advantage though.
Third Period, 12:10, Hurricanes 2-1: The Bruins continue to self destruct, as now Seidenberg goes to the box for boarding Jeff Skinner. Trash has begun to be thrown on the ice, with the fans warned that further objects thrown could lead to another Boston penalty.
Third Period, 11:48, Hurricanes 2-1: The Bruins will be two men down for the next two minutes as Chara goes off for a high stick and Marchand's night ends early with a misconduct.
Third Period, 11:30, Hurricanes 2-1: The Bruins will be shorthanded again, but Nathan Horton at least got his money's worth. He challenged Gleason to a fight and when Gleason refused, Horton dropped his gloves anyway and started to fire away as Gleason turtled. Horton gets four minutes for roughing and a misconduct and Gleason gets no penalties.
Third Period, 10:59, Hurricanes 2-1: The Bruins finally get on the board and finally end their power-play drought as Rich Peverley cuts the lead to one.
Peverley fired a shot home from the high right slot with Marchand providing the screen in front for their first goal in 23 power-play chances.
Third Period, 10:30, Hurricanes 2-0: The gloves come off again, this time with Chris Kelly exacting some revenge on Brett Sutter for his hit on Corvo earlier.
The scrum began with Lucic trying to get Tim Gleason to go, but Bryan Allen and the linesmen jumped in to prevent that. Away from that scrum, Kelly and Sutter shed the mitts and Kelly got Sutter's sweater over his head and dropped him with a right.
Third Period, 9:35, Hurricanes 2-0: The early jump the Bruins needed in this period to make a game of this simply hasn't been there, and they are fast running out of time to make any kind of comeback.
Third Period, 6:26, Hurricanes 2-0: Plenty of hitting early in the third but the parade to the penalty box has finally stopped, at least for now. The Bruins still haven't been able to cut into the lead though.
Third Period, 1:48, Hurricanes 2-0: The Bruins have switched up their lines for the third, with Caron skating with Bergeron and Marchand, Pouliot with Seguin and Horton and Lucic and Peverley down with Kelly.
Also, Matt Bartkowski got his first shift on defense since the first period.
Third Period, 0:00, Hurricanes 2-0: The final frame is under way here at the Garden with the Bruins needing a rally to pull this one out. After all the penalties in the second, the sides will be at even strength after the final second of Boston's latest power play expires.
Second Intermission Notes: The Bruins finally showed some signs of life in the second, getting involved physically with the Hurricanes. But Boston still hasn't offered Tuukka Rask any offensive support as the Bruins trail 2-0 after 40 minutes.
The Bruins will be 0 for 3 on the power play when Carolina's latest penalty expired one second into the third. That will be 22 straight chances on the man advantage without a goal.
Their penalty kill has been effective though despite being very busy. the Bruins have been called for seven penalties for 25 minutes, but killed off all five Carolina power plays, including a 5-on-3 advantage for a full two minutes.
Matt Bartkowski did not have a shift in the second despite the slew of penalties. Claude Julien obviously doesn't trust the struggling youngster in a tight game, but that could cause issues in the third with Zdeno Chara out for the first half of the period after picking up 17 penalty minutes instigating a fight late in the second.
End Second Period, Hurricanes 2-0: Down to just one period for the Bruins to rally in this one as they trail by two goals after two periods, though Joe Corvo did clang a shot off the post in the closing seconds of that frame.
Second Period, 18:01, Hurricanes 2-0: The Bruins survive that penalty as well as Ruutu evens it up with a slashing call. It will be 4 on 4 for 25 seconds, then the Bruins go on the power play.
Second Period, 16:26, Hurricanes 2-0: The Bruins kill off teh 5 on 3, but then go down a man again almost immediately as Dennis Seidenberg is called for interference.
Second Period, 14:19, Hurricanes 2-0: And it finally breaks loose at the Garden as a scrum in front with Horton and Jay Harrison brings everyone in. Zdeno Chara and Harrison drop the gloves and throw punches around the linesman, while Lucic was involved with several Hurricanes.
Cam Ward then got in Chara's face, bring Rask down the length of the ice, but no further bouts broke out. The Bruins will be down two men for a full two minutes with Chara getting an instigator and Rask a minor for leaving the crease, in addition to matching roughing minors to Horton and Harrison and fighting majors to Chara and Harrison.
Second Period, 13:12, Hurricanes 2-0: Shawn Thornton doing everything he can to spark the Bruins. He all but begged Tim Gleason to drop the gloves to no avail, then put a good hit on Jeff Skinner.
Second Period, 10:19, Hurricanes 2-0: The Hurricanes double the lead as Joni Pitkanen strikes from long range.
He had a head of steam coming down the left side and launched a shot from the top of the circle that beat Rask glove side to the far post.
Second Period, 8:32, Hurricanes 1-0: The Bruins fail to convert their 21st straight power play as it remains a one-goal deficit.
Second Period, 6:32, Hurricanes 1-0: That even strength situation didn't last long, as the Bruins now go on the power play with Jeff Skinner goes to the box for high-sticking Andrew Ference. Those two tangled in a wrestling match in the first period, so the bad blood continues between that pair.
Second Period, 5:53, Hurricanes 1-0: The Bruins kill that penalty off as Marchand is out of the box and the sides are back to even strength.
Second Period, 3:53, Hurricanes 1-0: The Bruins are shorthanded for teh first time in this one as Brad Marchand goes off for charging as he takes a healthy run at Tuomo Ruutu. Those two jaw a bit before Marchand heads to the box.
Second Period, 3:08, Hurricanes 1-0: Joe Corvo is back on the ice for the Bruins, who appear to have dodged a bullet as it looked like it could have been a serious injury to the Boston defenseman.
Second Period, 0:46, Hurricanes 1-0: The other Sutter in the game nearly strikes for Carolina, as Brandon Sutter hits the far post from the right wing, but it stays out.
Second Period, 0:00, Hurricanes 1-0: The middle frame is under way here at the Garden and Joe Corvo is back on the Boston bench.
First Intermission Notes: The Bruins haven't exactly been able to carry over their effort from the Chicago game to this one, as they fall behind 1-0 after one period.
The goal came on a second chance in front as the Bruins couldn't clear the crease. Matt Bartkowski was on the ice for that one and is a minus-1 in 3:14 over four shifts. He hasn't looked comfortable at this level, but the Bruins will need to use him as Joe Corvo was injured on a dangerous hit by Brett Sutter.
There was a delayed penalty call on Sutter for interference, but it was still disappointing to see no one on the Bruins go after Sutter in any way after the play. They didn't make him pay on the power play either, as Boston failed to convert its 20th straight chance with the man advantage.
The Bruins have now failed to score in four periods in front of Tukka Rask this season. Rask was solid but not spectacular in the opening frame, with the Bruins holding a 13-10 edge in shots.
End First Period, Hurricanes 1-0: The first 20 minutes are in the books, and the Bruins are down a goal and down a defenseman as Anthony Stewart Scored the only goal of the frame and Joe Corvo was injured on a hit by Brett Sutter.
First Period, 19:26, Hurricanes 1-0: The good and bad of Tyler Seguin on display on one shift, as a giveaway in the neutral zone leads to a Carolina chance, then he creates an opportunity of his own at the other end with a shot from the slot.
First Period, 17:56, Hurricanes 1-0: Lucic nearly sends Horton in alone on Ward, but the puck is a little too far ahead of Horton for him to chase it down. The scoring chances have slowed a bit, but the physical play has remained steady in this opening period.
First Period, 14:12, Hurricanes 1-0: Shawn Thornton pick-pockets old friend Tomas Kaberle and goes in for a scoring chance. Then has a few words for Sutter in a scrum in front of the net. Thornton can't get through the mass of bodies to get to Sutter, but that may not be his final attempt to get at him tonight after that hit on Corvo.
First Period, 10:45, Hurricanes 1-0: Jordan Caron with the bid from the right wing that clangs off the near post.
First Period, 12:00, Hurricanes 1-0: Nothing doing once again on the power play, as the Bruins have now failed to convert 20 straight chances with the man advantage.
First Period, 10:00, Hurricanes 1-0: Huge hit in the corner to Rask's right as Brett Sutter sends Joe Corvo flying into the boards. Corvo stays down for several minutes and heads to the locker room.
Sutter is given a minor for interference and the Bruins will have their first power play of the night, but will have to do it without Corvo at the point.
First Period, 7:44, Hurricanes 1-0: Strong shift for Daniel paille, who nails Jamie McBain with a big hit, then gets off a good scoring bid from the slot.
First Period, 6:05, Hurricanes 1-0: The Bruins come close to answering right back as Milan Lucic sends a pass out from behind the net to Nathan Horton at the top of the crease, but Ward makes the point-blank save.
First Period, 2:47, Hurricanes 1-0: The Hurricanes strike first, with Anthony Stewart popping in a rebound at the right post.
Brett Sutter had the initial bid in front, and Stewart finished it off for his second goal of the year, both coming against the Bruins.
First Period, 0:45, 0-0: Strong start for the Bruins, who created several chances on the first couple shifts of the game.
Marchand fed Seguin at the right post during a line change for one good opportunity. Nathan Horton also threw a big hit on Jiri Tlusty on his first shift, which should be a good sign for his effort in this one.
First Period, 0:00, 0-0: And we're under way here at the Garden, where the Bruins will look to avenge last week's loss to the Hurricanes in Carolina.
7 p.m.: The Bruins will open this one with Patrice Bergeron between Brad Marchand and Rich Peverley, with Zdeno Chara and Johnny Boychuk on defense and Tuukka Rask in goal.
Carolina counters with Alexei Ponikarovsky, Eric Staal and Tuomo Ruutu up front, Jamie McBain and Joni Pitkanen on the blue line and Cam Ward in net.
6:55 p.m.: Adam McQuaid and David Krejci are officially the scratches for Boston.
Zac Dalpe, Justin Faulk and Derek Joslin out for Carolina.
6:40 p.m.: Adam McQuaid was not on the ice for warm-ups and it appears he will miss at least one more game with his head/neck injury. Matt Bartkowski was on the ice and will fill in again.

6:30 p.m.: Tuukka Rask will be getting his second start of the season in this one. He led the Bruins out for warm-ups and will get the nod against Carolina.
Cam Ward led the Hurricanes out and will start for Carolina.
6 p.m.: In just about an hour, the Bruins will take on Carolina for the second time in less than a week as the Hurricanes visit the garden.
The Bruins dropped 3-2 decision in that first meeting, but are eager for a shot at redemption.
"They had our number the other night and we didn't play our best game," Bruins forward Brad Marchand said after the morning skate. "We know we can put a better game together on the ice and we want to show them how good our team can be and hopefully get a little revenge."
The Bruins know it won't be easy to get that revenge, but it does help to have already seen the Hurricanes once this season.
"It makes it a lot easier," Marchand said. "When you play a team you kind of know what they bring to the table. With Carolina, they're a very hard-working team. They always put a lot of pressure on you and we have to make sure we're prepared for that."
The Hurricanes like the idea of getting to face the Bruins twice in a week as well.
"I expect a real good, real intense game," Carolina coach Paul Maurice said. "They're feeling good after the win against Chicago. We've had a couple wins. The schedule has actually been fairly even for us the whole year. We've both played a lot of hockey so I think the early-season jitters are starting to worked out on both teams.
"I like it for the rivalry and the intensity," Maurice added. "I'd love to see the home and home series as much as possible throughout the league. I think they're great."
8 a.m. ET: After a sluggish start to the season, the Bruins got back to their winning ways on Saturday in Chicago. The Bruins won a 3-2 decision in a shootout by finally playing the physical style that keyed their success last year.
That win salvaged a split on Boston's two-game road trip. On Tuesday, the Bruins will get a chance to avenge the loss that began that trip, as the Hurricanes come to the Garden less than a week after beating the Bruins 3-2 on Carolina on Wednesday. It's a rematch the Bruins welcome.
"I don't think there's much to do as far as pre-scouting is concerned," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "It's more what we can do to have a better result against that team. At that point I didn't feel our team was playing the way it should and we were still in a close game. So we've just got to make sure we play better and play a lot more like we did in that second half of the Chicago game. It's about momentum. It's about confidence. And I think that's coming around."
The Bruins will look to get their offense going after managing just 10 goals in their first five games. Boston's anemic power play once again is at the root of much of those offensive struggles. The Bruins scored on their first chance with the man advantage of the season, but have failed to convert 19 straight opportunities since.
It won't get any easier against the Hurricanes. After allowing four power-play goals on 11 chances in its first two games, Carolina has allowed just one on 16 chances in the last three games. That includes a perfect 11-for-11 mark on the penalty kill in the last two games, with a pair of shorthanded goals in that span as the Hurricanes have won two straight after beginning the season 0-2-1.
The game will mark Tomas Kaberle's first return to Boston. Kaberle was the Bruins' biggest addition at the trade deadline, but didn't have as positive an impact as forwards Rich Peverley and Chris Kelly. Kaberle struggled in his brief time in Boston, and signed with Carolina this summer as a free agent. He has just one point and is a minus-5 in his first five games with the Hurricanes, but that point came on a power-play assist against the Bruins last Wednesday.
