Bud Selig Sets Deadline for Red Sox, Cubs to Agree on Compensation for Theo Epstein

Theo Epstein has resigned from his position as Red Sox general manager to become the president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs, but the two teams have yet to agree upon compensation for Epstein’s services. Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig is prepared to step in.

Selig has given the Red Sox and Cubs a Nov. 1 deadline to make a deal, according to The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham. If compensation can’t be agreed upon before then, Selig will reportedly mediate.

“They have until Nov. 1, Theo and Ben [Cherington] and all the other parties involved,” Selig said prior to Game 4 of the World Series on Sunday night. “Hopefully they can get things done. I always encourage clubs to try to get things done between themselves. Somehow, the commissioner has enough things of controversy.

“They’ll either get it done or they won’t. If they don’t, then I will.”

Epstein is expected to be introduced in Chicago on Tuesday, at which point talks between the two clubs will resume.
