Everett high school quarterback Jonathan DiBiaso threw three touchdowns on the team's first three possessions Friday night to tie the state record of 85 career touchdown passes set by Brockton's Tom Colombo 25 years ago. After a 55-yard pass to receiver Jaylen McRae down the right sideline, the record was all DiBiaso's.
Everett remains undefeated at 8-0, but the team's 41-14 victory over Medford took a backseat to DiBiaso's accomplishment. And as any good quarterback will tell you, you need more than just a good arm to throw a touchdown.
"I have been very fortunate to have the players that I've had around me," he told The Boston Globe. "From the line to the number of talented receivers I've had by my side, I could have never done this without any of them."
His father, John DiBiaso, coaches the Everett Crimson Tide, and he recognizes what this accomplishment means to both him and his son.
"The Colombos were a great pairing, quarterback and coach, and we're fortunate to be uttered in the same sentence," he said. "[Jonathan] was nervous all day. As Jaylen stepped into the end zone my eyes got a bit wet."
The top-ranked Crimson Tide will look to further their success in the postseason on the shoulders of DiBiaso, who now has 88 career touchdown passes after throwing six in the route.
"It's definitely a special moment. It's great that he did it and now we can get it out of the way," said Coach DiBiaso. "This wasn't our team goal, to get Jonathan the record, we want to play five more games."
