“We have renegotiated Javier’s contract and he is committed for five years to Manchester United.” His agent Eduardo Hernandez said. “The initial contract was good for both Javier and the club because it enabled both to see if they could fit together and if he could achieve what was expected of him.
“Both sides have met their expectations and United were happy to reward Javier after his very good performances last season.”
Hernandez scored 20 goals for the Red Devils last season after joining from Mexican club Chivas. The attack partnership he formed with Wayne Rooney powered his team to the English Premier League championship and relegated Dimitar Berbatov to the bench.
The 23-year-old striker is the latest of 13 players Manchester United has signed to contract extensions over the last year. The deal puts his pay in line with other established first-team players, but not on the same level as the club’s highest earners.
It will also help ward off interest in the player from the likes of Real Madrid. The Spanish powers were reportedly interested in signing the Mexican international and the new contract will certainly increase his value on the transfer market.
Eduardo Hernandez added, “Javier was not badly paid with his initial contract, but it was his first one and, with respect, not comparable with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Nani. But today I can say that the contract was just signed and everyone is satisfied. It was never likely that Javier would leave.”
