Magic Johnson just had to go there, didn’t he?

Asked during an appearance at the University at Albany for the accomplishment he is most proud of, Johnson bypassed his three NBA Most Valuable Player awards and five championships.

Johnson said he was most proud of his work in the community and organizing scholarships for students, one of whom was in the audience. After all, many players win rings and trophies without ever contributing to society.

“There will always be guys who win championships,” Johnson said, “except LeBron.”

Many in the audience hooted, and Johnson pretended to settle them down.

“I love the young man,” Johnson said of Heat forward LeBron James. “I know he’s going to get better in the fourth quarter this year.”

It took a second for Johnson’s joke to register with the crowd — due to the lockout, there’s a possibility there won’t be any games, and thus no fourth quarters, this year — but after a few seconds there was more laughter.

Check out Johnson’s comments about a minute into the video below.
