This is the Belgian's third season with the Gunners and he has no intention of following other stars through the exit door, according to Arsenal's website.
"I am really happy to have signed a new contract with Arsenal," he said. "I always had the intention to stay here. I feel there is a big belief in me from the Club, from the boss and from the fans and that is one of the reasons why I stayed.
"Arsenal is a fantastic Club. We have great supporters, we're doing well financially and we are playing with some quality young players now and they will develop, which is very good for the future."
The 25-year-old moved to the North London club from Ajax Amsterdam in 2009 for £10 million ($15.7 million). He became an instant hit at the Emirates, marshaling the Gunners' back line and netting an astonishing eight goals in his debut season.
An Achilles' injury wrecked his second season with the club, limiting him to just five appearances.
An ankle injury has hampered his start to the 2011-12 season. He has appeared in four games and his absence coincided with Arsenal’s disastrous start to the campaign. He is nearing a return to action and manager Arsene Wenger is thrilled that his vice captain will be at the club for years to come.
"We are absolutely delighted that Thomas has signed a new long-term contract." Wenger said. "Our plan is always to sign top quality players and with Thomas extending his contract, we have done just that. Thomas is a special player, who has always made a huge contribution on the pitch and we are looking forward to him being a part of our future at Arsenal Football Club."
Vermaelen has played 32 games for Belgium’s national team since his 2007 debut.
