FOXBORO, Mass. — Quarterback Tom Brady was not present for Tuesday's practice, though it was more than likely a day of rest during the first session of the bye week.

The Patriots held a blue-and-white scrimmage inside Gillette Stadium, and it was a fun, energetic type of atmosphere. Head coach Bill Belichick was laughing as each team huddled and pumped themselves up for the game, which was held in shorts and shells.

Left tackle Matt Light, who hurt his right ankle during the Patriots' game-winning drive, was also not present for the scrimmage. Cornerback Ras-I Dowling (thigh), defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth (back) and linebacker Dane Fletcher did not participate, either.

Running back Kevin Faulk (right knee), defensive lineman Ron Brace (right elbow) and defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick practiced for the first time Tuesday. Each player was eligible to practice after starting the season on the physically unable to perform list. The Patriots have up to three weeks to either promote them to the active roster or place them on injured reserve. Until a decision is made, they will not count against the 53-man roster.

Linebacker Jerod Mayo (knee) practiced for the second time in a row after returning last Friday. Safety Josh Barrett (hamstring, thumb) returned to the field after being the only player missing from Friday's session.

Tackle Sebastian Vollmer (back), safety Sergio Brown (chest) and wide receiver Julian Edelman (ankle) practiced Tuesday despite missing Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
