Tony Sparano 'Is the Right Coach,' According to Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross Tony Sparano has been on the hot seat in Miami for over two seasons. But even after an 0-4 start, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross doesn’t believe a change is necessary.

“I think that we really have to stay together and get behind our coach,” he said in an interview on WINZ-AM, the Dolphins’ flagship station. “I believe that Tony is the right coach. I think all the games we have played have been really close. We could have gone either way. When you see the team practicing and playing as hard as they can, I think that’s a good sign, but certainly, we have to see better results.”

Get behind the head coach? Like the Dolphins front office did when they went behind Sparano’s back to interview the hot head coach candidate of the offseason, Jim Harbaugh?

As for the idea that the losses have been close, only one of their losses was by less than double-digits. Still, Sparano remains popular with his team, and for that, his job seems safe for the time being. Ross believes that consistency is the key.

“If you look at the winning teams, they’re consistent and stay the course,” said Ross. “You go through rough periods. I think we have a lot of talent.”

Sparano has picked up just one winning season in his three as Dolphins head coach, and has compiled a 25-27 regular season record, with the team losing its lone postseason game in 2008. It’s a long season, and though there is plenty of time for improvement, the Dolphins are on a league-worst seven-game losing streak dating to 2010.

There’s a difference, it would seem, between consistency and banging your head against a wall hoping for things to change.
