The boxing world lost a legend Monday night when former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier died from complications of liver cancer. He was 67.

Frazier was diagnosed with the disease in October after needing to be hospitalized several times.

Smokin' Joe, of course, achieved boxing fame when handed Muhammad Ali his first loss in the pair's first of three fights in the 1970s. Ali would win the next two.

In 1970, Frazier defeated Jimmy Ellis to become the heavyweight champion. After defending the title for four more fights, Frazier was defeated in 1973 by George Foreman. He would never regain the title.
