Kyle Orton Signed By Chiefs, Proving NFL Teams Are Desperate for Competent Quarterbacks

What, were the Chiefs not able to get in touch with Joe Kingman or Shane Falco?

It took all of one day for an NFL team to decide a quarterback who wasn’t good enough to start over Tim Tebow could be effective as their starter, proving yet again that despite a book of rules that heavily favor offenses, halfway-decent quarterbacks are hard to find.

The Kansas City Chiefs picked up Kyle Orton on Wednesday, a day after the Denver Broncos had cut the 29-year-old Purdue product. He could take over the starting duties from Tyler Palko, who is starting for the injured Matt Cassel.

The shortage of competent quarterbacks in the NFL is reaching a crisis point. The 49ers have Super Bowl dreams, and they’re placing their faith in Alex Smith. The Cowboys keep on sending out Tony Romo, hoping the good Romo shows up more often than the bad Romo. (The good one showed up Thursday.) Cam Newton, who many said didn’t have the tools to play in the NFL, is seventh in the league in passing yards.

There was nothing more ridiculous than watching Dwayne Johnson — a former Miami defensive lineman — playing quarterback for the Boston Rebels in the movie The Game Plan, or Keanu Reeves calling signals for the Washington Sentinels in The Replacements. But after watching the majority of quarterback play in the league this year, many fans must be wondering if it’s worth giving The Rock a second look.
